FEBRUARY TIP: Green Candlelight

We love candles, the warm light, the fragrance, and the fact that they don't require flipping a switch. Candles are the ultimate green light source. But there are some features in the candles many of us own that you should be aware of.

First, many candles are made with paraffin, a petroleum by-product that creates the black soot in the smoke when you blow a candle out. Second, many candle wicks contain metals in the wicks such as lead and aluminum, though the EPA outlawed most lead content in candles a few years ago, many candles still carry the lead in the wick.

So what should you look for when you're candle shopping?
Soy Candles are a great option, first because they're made with a renewable resource and burn more cleanly, but also because soybeans are a major crop in the US and any time you buy Soy, you're most likely supporting an American farmer, and reducing yet another source of income for petrol companies. You should also look for candles that have metal-free wicks to protect your family and the air in your home from toxins.

Some stores that carry Eco-friendly candles: Target, http://newportcandles.com/, Yankee Candle's New brand "Beanswax" 100% soy wax, and many others are starting to produce soy candles.

So during Valentines Day, make sure your romancing with an more Eco-friendly candle. It's a small, simple, smelling-good green choice.

Have a Happy Green Valentine's Day!!!!
