FEBRUARY TIP: STOP JUNK MAIL

If you're like us, when you check the mail you often roll your eyes at the sight of all the junk mail you receive any given day. Especially, when you probably only use one or two coupons from that mass of envelopes and flyers. So, why allow this process to continue when a simple step can stop the vast majority of that unnecessary mail? Oh what perfect harmony that would be! Well guess what: you can. The best thing about is that it’s simple. But first, here are some facts:

  • More than 62 billion pieces of junk mail are produced yearly.
  • The majority of household waste consists of unsolicited mail.
  • Approximately 44% of junk mail goes to a landfill unopened.
  • $320M of local taxes are used to dispose of unsolicited mail each year.
  • Each year, 100 million trees are used to produce junk mail.
  • 250,000 homes could be heated with one day's supply of junk mail.
  • Americans receive almost 4 million tons of junk mail every year.

Take Action:

Call 888-5OPTOUT or log into https://www.optoutprescreen.com to remove your name from credit issuers' mailing lists. It's fast and free.

You can also take the extra step and get rid of junk mail and plant some trees at the same time. Go to www.greendimes.com for more information.

A REMINDER:
Don't forget this Valentine's Day to use recycled cards or to create your own creative, romantic card from recycled materials. Have a great Valentine's Day and we hope you enjoyed February's tip.

Hedricks,
This blog is so awesome! I just wish it was updated more than monthly because y'all have the best tips. Just simple stuff we overlook. That's what green is all about doing the little things everyday that make big change.

Y'all have posted some great links to reduce junk mail junk. Check them out , people!

Here's my little "green tip" if I may. If you want to get really creative for your Valentine this year AND you want to recycle AND you want to do something with your junk mail....
make him/her a recycled Valentine card using the paper in the junk mail to create a multilayered tapestry of color, pictures, and even rearranged letters collage style to express your deepest love. It sounds crazy I know but I thought it would be cool. Just make sure your 'Tine doesn't see Aldi coupons pasted in conspicuous places. Be creative!
Peace and green love,
JB in ATL

This is a great tip. I opted out several years ago and I will tell you that it really does work! I still get a little bit of junk mail, but it is nothing compared to the onslaught that I got before opting out.
